You’ll be living on the small island called Oostenburg, part of the group of islands with the official name of Oostelijke Eilanden en Kadijken: Kattenburg (with the iconic Scheepvaartmuseum), Wittenburg and Oostenburg. Constructed in the 17th century on the River IJ. Possibly the first industrial zone in the Netherlands, with timber mills, docks where sailing vessels were constructed, and a rope laying site. That industrious nature can still be felt today, thanks to the concrete plates adorning the quay and the robust wooden jetty on the water’s edge; two authentic cranes enhance that feeling. The neighborhood is in full development and is experiencing a second youth; beautiful homes are being built, greenery is ever more present and services such as neighborhood shops, trendy restaurants and bars, a pocket park and playgrounds are to be found. Just a stone’s throw away the huge Van Gendt halls are being renovated to provide space for the catering industry, an indoor market, businesses, a cafe lounge for relaxation, comparable to the industrial complex on the other side of town, the Westergasfabriek.
